Wild about Laura Ingalls Wilder! June 13, 2018

We made it to Spring Valley, Minnesota last night but the museum had closed so we waited until today. The house was really just a lot of things from the time period that the Wilder's lived in Spring Valley. It wasn't stuff of ma and pa's so it wasn't really of real interest to me. We did visit the church that Laura attended with Almanzo and his family. We drove by and saw the Wilder barn (it is on private property now) as well.
The church that the Wilder family attended, as well as Laura.

This caught our attention because it is REALLY gross! The women back then would use human hair to make wreaths and artwork. I think I shall pass on this one.

The church is no longer used as a church but as a museum.

The old Wilder barn.

Once we finished in Spring Valley we headed onto Burr Oak, Iowa. This is the only one of the places that we visited that had the original building that Laura lived in as a child. Pretty cool that they have been able to preserve it for Laura lovers to go and to visite.

This side of the hotel was a tavern. These are the original floors. The Ingalls did not like living in a place that housed a tavern. The owner's family lived in the room straight ahead.

A mini tour

The kitchen where ma would prepare the meals with the help of the girls. She would have have to prepare 3 meals a day for about 25 hotel guests and more if people off of the street stopped in.

The pantry. Ma would serve up the plates and put them in here.

The girls would open these doors and serve the guests.

The room off of the kitchen in the basement where the Ingalls family lived. It was VERY small and they had to keep there stuff in the trunk. Ma did not bring her china shepherdess doll out at this place as she did not consider it "home".

All of the girls came down with the measles here in Burr Oak. They were miserable and all of the people in the town brought their kids to play with the Ingalls girls while they were sick so they could be exposed and get it over with. It is easier to deal with the measles as a child than it is as an adult. It made the girls feel even worse as they could not get any rest.

The trunk that stored the family things.

Can you guess who we are?

Relaxing by Silver Lake

Quite refreshing!
The Masters Hotel where the Ingalls family lived in Burr Oak

The Ingalls family moved a couple of different places in Burr Oak, Iowa.

The gold paper behind us shows the height of ma and the height of pa. They were both very short but average for their times. It is believed due not eating much red meat and not having enough calcium in their diets.

The Burr Oak Cemetery that Laura would go to with her friend if she had free time. She enjoyed reading the headstones and learning the stories of those buried there.
