The best 4th of July ever! (Adventure Girls plus Jeeves)

July 4, 2018

So, is there a more appropriate place to celebrate the 4th than Jamestown and Williamsbug, VA? This was a 1st for us to celebrate here and we had a great time! We started off by touring the Jamestown Settlement then Historic Jamestowne. The Adventure Girls completed the the Junior Ranger packet & activities and became official Junior Rangers.  Jeeves was in Heaven with history. It was nice to compare the Settlement to the actual location of the fort, etc. The Settlement was really nice for the little to bring things to life and to be hands-on.  Historic Jamestowne was nice to be where they actually were and to see the excavation work they are doing with the archaeological dig. Very neat how they are able to recover so much in order for us to really know what things were like back in those days.

Once we finished with Jamestown, we headed over to Williamsburg.  We were able to check out a few of the buildings but not many since we spent so much time at the other two locations. It was all good though. We had dinner at the Dog Street Pub (http://www.dogstreetpub.com/) and dined with several other people and chatted at a big family style table that they had. We enjoyed it.  We heard that the area to best view the fireworks in front of the Governor's Palace was already quite full so we rushed over there to secure a spot. We learned a couple of things just in case we ever go again...need comfy chairs, blanket and cards or something to help pass the time. As packed as it was, I thought it was going to be insane getting of. However, it was actually pretty organized and we got out without a lot of trouble. I would definitely recommend for others to to not only visit these places but to visit them on the 4th of July. What an awesome experience!

Looking at Jamestown Island

The Jamestown Settlment

I loved seeing everyone in authentic dress. They were so knowledgeable and patient answering questions.

We enjoyed going on all three of the replica ships.

Can you visualize what it was like to be there?

Take a look around.

I am VERY happy we visited since I didn't realize until today that the little didn't realize that Pocahontas was real. Part of the Junior Ranger program wanted us to ensure that we helped dispel the information that Disney put out that she married John Smith. She married a John...just not Smith. She married John Rolfe.

One of the dig sites.

The tall monument that looks like the Washington Monument in the nation’s capital was placed on Jamestown Island by the United States government in 1907 for the 300th anniversary of the settlement. It cost $50,000, stands 103 feet tall, and is made of New Hampshire granite. The steps at the base were covered with dirt when the first visitor center was built in 1957, but now the platform provides many visitors a shaded resting spot on hot summer days.

Jamestown Glasshouse...so neat to watch!

Meet George...haha!

Play that fife, Jeeves!

Look who we ran into...George Washington!

Marching in before the parade.

It was very neat how Thomas Jefferson read the Declaration of Independence before the fireworks started. What a great and memorable night!

We loved all of the fireworks set to the patriotic music.

The grand finale!
Happy Independence Day, America!
