We are big Little House on the Prairie fans! Who didn't grow up reading LHOTP books and watching the tv series? We bought the DVDs one summer and rewatched the entire tv run. We decided that we were going to do the Wilder Trail this year but since we live in the south, we started backwards with Laura's last houses. What a treat! I never knew that Laura was only 4'11" and that Almanzo was only a few inches taller. Her house was so neat because Almanzo built it to her height. It was almost like a playhouse. It had so many of her original belongings and her Christmas Clock still works! I was shocked! Their nightshirts were left out and made it seem like they just stepped out for a moment and would be right back. I have to say it was very neat! We also got to see Pa's fiddle, his real fiddle, at the museum. They had TONS of the Ingalls' families original belongings. It was so worth the trip!
We also visited the "rock house" that Laura's daughter Rose had built for her parents one Christmas. It was very neat too but it just didn't seem to have the character of the house that Almanzo built and perhaps that is why Laura and Almanzo moved back to it about 12 years after the rock house was built for them. Almanzo and Laura both died in this home. We visited their graves at the cemetery in Mansfield and I have to say that I felt a strong connection to Laura here. I shed a couple of tears as well. Her death felt all too real here and we all know that we wanted Laura to live forever! We all feel like we were a part of the Ingalls family. The world was a better place because Half Pint was in it!
