So we loaded up in the Suburban for another day of adventure. We made it to Walnut Grove and I have to say that we were TERRIBLY disappointed with the Laura Ingalls Museum at this location. I would not waste my money on it again. It has a lot of tv memorabilia in it but not a lot else. It was a disappointment.
The actual homestead that had the dugout, Plum Creek and the trail around where their wonderful house was was great. I would highly recommend it to others to visit.
Example of a dugout. I just could not even imagine living in one of these. Each one we visited had a gas type smell to it. Not cool!
A home literally dug into the ground.
Dirt floors
Small table
One window
The bed...I just can't ever imagine feeling clean living in one of these.
But the family would have a "wonderful house" that pa built them. This is a replica of what it would have looked like.
Example of how the prairie grass would have been.
The "Big Rock" that Laura spoke of the girls playing on in Plum Creek.
Plum Creek
A look around the area.
The dugout they actually lived in has now collapsed but this is where it was.
This up where the wonderful house was. It is so sad that the locusts ate pa's crops 2 years in a row!
I was so surprised to come upon Sleepy Eye. I didn't realize it was an actual town. I remember Laura talking about pa going to Sleepy Eye or Mankato. Well, they are both for real. Again, it was neat to have been where the Ingalls had been. I felt like one of them growing up!
Our next hotel was quite the surprise. We always stay at Marriott based hotels. We had never stayed at a Marriott Moxy before. It was really quite cool! It had hammocks we hung out in.
It had an electric guitar with a speaker that yes, even though I have no clue how to play...I hooked it up to play it and my fellow Adventure Girl begged me to stop. She was trying to be such the considerate hotel guest. Me, well, they didn't put it in the room for nothing I am sure. It was fun!
Cool little phone they had.
The shower gave me a giggle. "Deep end"....haha!
One of my favorite mottos...YOLO...you only live once!
